Conjunctive Use
All cities should have at least 2 sources of water. Relying on a single water source, especially a drought-stricken Lake Travis, is dangerous.
The cities of Austin, Cedar Park , Leander and many cities around the lake rely completely on the drought/flood prone, over-stressed, over-promised Colorado River.
Other water is available. The only responsible action is for all these city councils to look at the other sources.
An enormous aquifer, the Carrizo/Wilcox, lies to our east and south. The aquifer is predominately sand, so it is considered to be basically drought-proof. Several strata are in the Carrizo/Wilcox system of aquifers. The lowest level known of the Wilcox is the Simsboro. The deep Simsboro in Milam and Burleson County is so deep that no private wells are in it. They are in the higher strata. The only cities taking water from the deep Simsboro are Bryan and College Station. Yep, the Aggies!
The Simsboro has 8 times the total capacity as all the reservoirs in the State combined. It is so underused, it rejects recharge. Water from both the deep Simsboro and the shallower Simsboro in Bastrop and Lee Counties is currently being planned to be piped down Hwy 79 to the SH 130 interchange just outside eastern Round Rock.
Round Rock, Cedar Park and Leander are connected by a water line. Simsboro water would be another source of water. It is drought-proof, prolific and virtually untapped. The Simsboro is in the Brazos River Basin, thus keeping the 3 cities in their own basin.
The 3 cities could buy from these water companies and keep the initial cost of the infrastructure off their constituents, or they could do as San Marcos , Kyle, Buda and four other water supply companies have done, apply for permits and put in their own wells!
The BCRUA organization is a great idea. They are just going after the wrong water! |
