LCRA/SAWS AGREEMENT
 |
| Lake Travis Sometimes Islands 2006: Remember when you could almost walk from Mansfield Dam Park to Hippie Hollow? |
LCRA's recent study concludes that water needs in our basin will be as much as 25% more than expected in the next 50 years. As a result, the LCRA Board notified San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS) that "no water can be made available to SAWS...as it was originally envisioned."
SAWS in turn is suing LCRA for breaching the agreement.
In a recent letter calling for mediation, LCRA stated, "It would be 'unscientific and imprudent, at best,' to use outdated date that do not reflect accelerated population growth and water needs."
A proposed draft permit at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) would have authorized LCRA to divert 853,514 acre feet per year (AFY) from the Colorado River. This water would be stored in an off-channel reservoir on Pierce Ranch in Wharton County. The water would be used jointly by LCRA and SAWS--another out-of-basin customer. SAWS also wanted LCRA to use the 50,000 AFY of water reserved for addition needs in our basin for the plan.
The Project was to be under study until 2015. It is definitely stalled; however, these potential results do not eliminate the potential for a long-term water-sharing agreement. |
